Why we like it:
cosy, in beautiful nature, many sights nearby, good food, mountain
retreat feel
OUR REVIEW
To see the golden light shimmer on the leaves of tall tress, to see the
hillsides at dawn or sunset, to see the distant misty Kavala, to stay
in a simple all-wood cabin-like room (small intimate and homely) to
mix with people, drinks or ask the owner Demosthenes questions about
life on "the mountain". Often the mountains around you look
as if covered by soft bristles of the many trees listening to the
wind's influence. Early morning and late evening views of Thassos and
Samothraki. Sunrises are gorgeous and rejuvenating. A 650 m altitude
offers these special views and experiences.
Dasiko Horio is built as a series of large wood buildings. The rooms
are quite plain, either all Swedish pine and sloping ceilings or more
typical but with shared balcony areas.
Bathrooms are just standard white or off white tiles and shower trays.
Electric heating in the rooms. Rarely too hot in the summer - mountain
cool in the evenings.
Great views from it - real mountain feel. Very low prices.
This is by no means luxury - it is very simple, but it has the
appeal of fitting in well with its natural surroundings.
The rooms at "Orfeas" building are best. There is another building above the restaurant area and rooms
have the benefit of a balcony - but it is a communal one - however if
sitting outside in milder or warm months, on the balcony (even with
others sharing it) is something you treasure, together with better
distant views these may be your best choice but the lower rooms are
nicer.
Do be prepared here - as with anywhere in the
mountains - that the outside temperature can be surprisingly cold at
night even when sea level places nearby have summery weather.
At weekends there can be several hundred people coming up to eat at
the restaurant. Most peaceful during the week.
They cook game, pork, soups ("fasolada" - bean soup) and a
large variety of other dishes. Two or more main dishes of the day are
the norm.
Fish - fresh fish/sea food almost every day, the owner Demosthenes dives/fishes
when weather allows. Very good cooking, a little beyond the usual.
Well-worth dining at Dasiko, for the excellent food and
because once "home" for the evening in the mountains, you will want to
stay and relax.
Perhaps the motto Dasiko Horio, escape to nature explains the place
rather well.
You will find the rooms warm (in winter) but do grab a seat near the
fireplace in the lounge area of the dining room and bar to feel cozy
when relaxing in the evening.
Night-time views include distant settlements and dimly twinkling
lights, far enough away to allow specially clear views of the stars on
a good day.
The Falakro Ski Centre is about 65-70km from here. Another one nearby
- just a few kilometres up the mountain - does not operate reliably,
sadly.
There are
5 or 6 hiking trails around the mountain, a guide is available by
advance request.
The flora & fauna of Paggaio mountain is interesting and
diverse. Worthy of note are also the rock engravings from 13th
century B.C. Read

Dasiko Horio consists of three chalet-like buildings:
the cafe/restaurant, Orfeas and Athena.
Orfeas has two floors and bay
windows. 10 rooms for 2-3 people, with sloping roofs. No balconies.
Athena is on one floor, with a (shared) balcony running on both sides.
10 rooms for 2-4 people (the 3rd & 4th in bunk-beds).
Rooms face either the Eleftheroupoli plain down below (and sea &
islets in the distance) or the beautiful Paggaio mountain.
All rooms have simple bathrooms with showers.
Electric heaters are used for heating in the winter (they are very
effective).
