OUR REVIEW
A tiny, charming hotel in a restored old
building, of ten high-ceiling rooms with character and style.
Neo-classical building from 1898, designed by Ernest Chiller (famous
German architect who has given character to many prominent Athenian
buildings).
Centrally located, by the "Mitropolis" Cathedral
square (Athens centre), near Plaka and the Acropolis. (See
hotel location on map)
The location means it is only a few steps to Ermou street's shopping
and you are in Plaka just as
soon as you cross the
square. A comfortable Starbucks cafe, is on one side of the square, in
a most pleasing period building. The cafe has an international book
and news/magazine basement shop (open, even on Sundays) and is entirely
non-smoking (no less than a marvel in any Greek city!). It may not seem Athenian but it is where many Athenians
gather in this area! Of course, as this is Athens numerous other
cafes, restaurants and bars are nearby.
All rooms at Magna Grecia have
pleasing decor, corniced moulded ceilings, wall paintings, wooden floors, long windows
(double glazed - but the sound of Athens traffic and the bells of the
Mitropolis are very much heard!). Each is named after a Greek
island. The 6 rooms at the front have splendid views of the Acropolis
and the cathedral square.
Some rooms have tiny balconies (for atmosphere
only - too small to sit
on!).
The 2 triple rooms are at the back of the building (with
windows only to the
interior atrium/staircase).
Beds are all natural, Coco-Mat make (a thriving Greek company
that now exports worldwide) - one of the most comfortable
beds you could possibly experience, unless a rock hard mattress is your
preference...so perhaps the best of mattresses will make up for the
ringing of the church bells! (do be aware, this grand church has loud bells
that ring on the
hour every hour, so midnight is a bit noisy!).
A basic breakfast is served on the splendid indoor/outdoor roof
terrace...start the day with a vista of the Acropolis that will fuel
memories for years to come.
Air conditioning/heating, TV
& DVD player, mini-fridge, bathroom with bathtub or shower,
safe box, daily maid
service.
SERVICES
On the roof: outdoor terrace & indoor room, both with
magnificent Acropolis views. For breakfast and coffee/drinks.
DISTANCES
Plaka centre - 20 m, Acropolis - 600 m, Syntagma square - 250 m.
Athens airport - 35 km (55 minutes by metro), Pireas port - 15 km (15-20 minutes
by metro).
Parking in the area is difficult (unless you pay for private parking
in one of the garages around). You are advised not to keep a
car for your Athens stay, instead better to make the most of the
central location that allows you to go everywhere worthwhile on foot.
If you overdo it and have "too far to walk back" taxis are cheap.
