Why we like it: Has that "grand hotel of the town" atmosphere, smart, central, best in town
OUR REVIEW
Rex Hotel is now smart and glowing since its renovation in 1999. It feels like the focal point of the town, rooms are smart and the lobby, ground floor restaurant and cafe have a traditional quality hotel feel.
If this is the early part of your visit to the Peloponnese or your flight arrives or departs from the airport a little late or early, it makes it so much more comfortable to stay nearby - the airport is just 15 minutes away by car or by taxi. But there are many other reasons to stay in what is a simply elegant hotel.
Rooms are all well equipped and pleasingly furnished in a partly plush but not heavy, comfortable style. Double glazed windows keep the town in view but mostly out of earshot. They are in double or twin bed layout or a suite. Suites have that much extra room - noticeably - and persian style rugs and other decorative boosts to add to style and comfort. Some have a view across the streets and building-tops to the sea, which is a 20 minute walk from Rex Hotel.
Getting to your room with luggage is especially easy as the lift has the widest opening doors (you could drive a car in) we have seen.
Room service is available 18 hours a day and the restaurant serves meals all night.
The hotel is absolutely in the centre of things in Kalamata, with the castle in one direction (worth a visit both for the ancient structure itself and the panoramic views across the town and out to sea) and the sea front in the other. There are numerous shops, cafes and restaurants in the surrounding streets.
42 rooms & 1 suite.
All rooms have air conditioning/heating, double-glazed windows, satellite TV, mini-bar, direct dial telephone, internet access. Bathrooms with shower or bathtub, hairdryer.
Triple rooms and interconnecting rooms are available.
The
suites are on the top floor, they are extra spacious, have jacuzzi bathtubs and a separate shower, CD player, large balcony with panoramic views (Kalamata town & sea in the distance).
