The Tour

Your experienced guide will show you wineries that employ vastly different techniques of wine making so that you will experience the diversity of Cretan production from the traditional to the ultra-modern.

Your tour can be personalised to your requirements or we can recommend a rounded tour enabling you to experience the uniqueness of Cretan vintners and wineries.

Wine Production

The cultivation of vineyards and the production of wine were established over 4000 years ago by the Minoan civilisation.

We will show you how today some wines are still produced by the small cottage industry using the age-old ways, whilst others employ ultra-modern methods, both of which however, continuously produce excellent white, red and rosé wines.

The Wines

The wines are produced from various varieties of grape. Some of these varieties are international whilst others are native only to Crete.

You will have the chance to try some of the distinctive wines which are only found here on the island. Most of the wines tasted on your tour are either organic or bio-dynamic (cultivated and harvested according to the phases of the moon) and all are unique. 

The New Wines

On Crete there is a new generation of vintners who have used the knowledge from 4000 years of wine making and combined it with modern understanding and production techniques.

These vintners have now produced wines which will both surprise and delight your nose and your palette. 

An Example Wine Tour (approx. 10 hours) : 

Starting at 9.00 a.m. from Kamilari we drive to a wine producer situated 500 meters above sea level.  After a walk through the vineyard you will have a tour of the modern winery and taste some of the excellent wines made here.

See a 3000 year old olive tree. 

In complete contrast the next vintner produces wine in the most traditional of ways. You will soon understand, and taste, that he doesn’t just use grapes, but infuses both passion and soul to his wines.

Coffee stop followed by a visit to a monastery which is home to the famous icon to the ‘Christ of Vine’.

Our final vintner will take you to his vineyards high above the Messara plain, here you will taste wines produced by bio-dynamics. To round off the day, he invites you back to his family home where you can relax and enjoy some of his other exceptional wines together with a delicious al fresco bar-b-que.
