Authentic, magical, isolated and afordable.

Therefore more and more captivate visitors keep coming back to the Greek island's south coast - and especially to one remote taverna with rooms and its own pulling power.

It is very much a family business. Stavros and Vicki Perakis, who own and run this traditional taverna at the end of a long, winding road through stunning mountain scenery.

It is a little piece of Crete as it was in the 60s and 70s - but with electricity and hot water.

A tiny secluded bay and literally perched at the water's edge, you can enjoy superb meals of freshly caught and perfectly cooked fish and a carafe of local wine.

Perfect for those whose idea of nightlife is counting the stars and enjoy the sound of the sea.

For years the building was a high-ceilinged carob storehouse; there were no roads, so ships would stop by to take the crop to market.

But then the market collapsed, and in the 1950s Stavros's parents started a kafenío - serving fresh fish, a bit of salad, drinks and watermelons (floated in the sea to keep them cool).

On the hill near the tavern of Agia Fotini you can still see the ruins of the ancient town Kionia, which flourished in the prominoan years. Today, the ruins of the town cover an area of more than 150 meters (from east to west) and 100 meters (from north to south), while the other half town is situated below the sea surface, in front of the tavern.

If you do start observing the surrounding area, you will notice traces of buildings and terraces that indicate the existence of Kionia. It is believed that when the town began to sink in water, inhabitants were forced to abandon it and move on higher areas, where the villages Kerames and Agallianos are now located.

Agia Fotia Taverna is just 500m away from Kionia Apartments.
